Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women. If detected early, colorectal cancer has a 95% cure rate. Colonoscopy is the most effective screening tool for early detection because it can find precancerous growths before symptoms appear, and prevent cancer.

The risk for developing colorectal cancer increases with age. That’s why it’s so important to get a screening as recommended.

Is it time for your colonoscopy? These recommended screening guidelines will help you decide:
  • For most individuals, begin screening at age 45.
  • If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, consider getting screened earlier.
Jefferson Health also offers additional colonoscopy screenings, including:
  • Virtual colonoscopy — uses computed tomography (CT) technology to provide a 3D image of your colon, without the need for the insertion of a probe, as with standard colonoscopy exams.
  • Open-access colonoscopy — a service intended for low-risk patients age 50 and older who can schedule a colonoscopy without a pre-procedure visit.
  • Double-balloon colonoscopy — an advanced technique that allows your doctor to examine abnormal tissue in your small intestines. It’s meant for patients who require further evaluation based on recurrent or persistent symptoms.
